In the world of Computer Science education, it’s time to press Ctrl+Shift. Next week, I’m facilitating a CSTA summit challenging the status quo. Our focus? Transforming CS professional development to emphasize what truly matters: equity, inclusion, and effective teaching strategies. By leveraging the CSTA PD Alignment Rubric, we’re resetting how we prepare educators to bring high-quality CS instruction to all students.

Our summit zeroes in on four key standards from the CSTA PD Alignment Rubric,, each vital to elevating CS education. We’re tackling Equity and Inclusion (Standard 2) to ensure CS reaches all students. Professional Growth and Identity (Standard 3) empowers educators to continually refine their craft. Instructional Design (Standard 4) equips teachers with strategies to create engaging, effective lessons. Lastly, Classroom Practice (Standard 5) bridges the gap between theory and real-world application. By focusing on these areas, we’re moving beyond coding skills to nurture well-rounded, impactful CS educators.

The summit features dynamic sessions designed to spark dialogue and inspire action. Our panel, ‘Improving Teaching and Learning through Teacher Professional Learning,’ brings together nattional experts on teacher professional learning to answer questions like:

  • What initially drew you to focus on learner-centered approaches in CS Professional Learning?
  • What’s your approach to making sure CS Professional Learning really connects with all teachers, regardless of their background or experience? How do you support facilitators to do the same?

.Following this, our interactive presentation on ‘Leading Effective Teacher PL’ puts theory into practice. Participants will engage in hands-on activities, collaboratively exploring innovative approaches to professional learning. This session aims to equip PD providers with fresh tools and techniques to elevate their offerings.

This summit marks a pivotal moment in CS education, as we collectively enhance our approach to teacher professional learning. By focusing on equity, pedagogy, and effective practices, we’re set to unlock new possibilities for CS educators and students alike. I cannot wait to learn from this fantastic group!
